The Big Rip Brewing Company is the first small-batch brewery and taproom to open in North Kansas City. Big Rip led the way for other breweries and craft beer bars to follow. The brewery is named after a scientific theory that suggests the universe will ultimately be torn apart as a result of expansion. Inside, the taproom’s decor (notice the hanging chainsaw above the bar) and beer names have (sometimes obscure) names that reference characters or elements from sci-fi and horror films. Sometimes the rear event space is converted into a pop-up bar with a zany theme and features themed cocktails.
Taps carry a range of IPAs, kolsch, porter, sometimes a Scotch Ale, hefeweizen, popular Zelda’s Cream Ale, and other rotating seasonal and one-off beers. A limited selection of cocktails, hard seltzer, and wine are also available. Order food from the kiosk for Hawg Jaw BBQ, a separate business located next door that walks orders to guests in the taproom or patio.
